How to Become a Couples and Sex Therapist

I decided to be a counselor when I was eight years old. Being a couple’s counselor has been a passion of
mine ever since. When I was young, I would spend my weekends in the local Barnes & Nobel reading all
of the psychology books I could get my hands on. It wasn’t until my work with couples that I realized the
need for the need for me to specialize in sexual health. Couples would sit in front of me frustrated,
hopeless, and in pain because their sex life was not what they desired it to be. Sexual dysfunction
seemed to drive even the most happy couples a part. I knew I needed to pursue sex education
further—my couples needed it. The last few years I’ve consumed everything I could on sexual health
through various avenues. While I am involved in various consultation groups with other sex therapists
and continued education through Sexual Health Alliance; there are many resources out there for you to
learn more about sex. You don’t need a degree to improve your sex life.

In this blog post, I’ve done the hard work for you and gathered together some of my favorite resources to share with you. These
resources include podcasts, shows, books, Instagram accounts, and websites. Let’s get to it.

Podcasts

Currently, there are over 800,000 active podcasts. And lucky for us that love sexual health, there are a
few on sex. “Sex with Emily” is one of my personal favorites to recommend. Emily Morse is a doctor of
human sexuality and she discusses various topics from initiating sex to BDSM. Another podcast I love is
“Sex and Psychology” by Dr. Justin Lehmiller. Dr. Lehmiller is a Doctor of Social Psychology and
researcher with The Kinsey Institute. Yes, the Kinsey Institute. His podcast touches on the science of
sexual fantasies, the impact of ADHD on sex, and the neuroscience of pleasure. If you love science, Dr.
Lehmiller is your new sex education guru. You’re welcome. The last podcast I would suggest to listen to
is “Sex with Dr. Jess”. This podcast is hosted by sexologist, Jessica O’Reilly. Dr. Jess covers topics such as
sexual personality types, seduction, and sexual shame. I have these three podcasts on rotation, I think
you will too.

Shows

If Podcasts aren’t your thing, that’s okay. There’s always Netflix. When it comes to Netflix “Sex,
Explained” is a great short series that touches on the biology of attraction as well as delving into the
science around sexual fantasies. Our favorite human, Dr. Lehmiller, even makes an appearance. The next
suggestion, “Masters of Sex”, is a non-fictional show that explores how two researchers, William
Masters and Virginia Johnson, pioneered human sexuality research at Washington University in the
1950’s. I mean, the fashion alone. Finally, a fun fictional show to watch while you’re cuddled up in
quarantine is “Sex Education”. All things sex are explored within this quirky, cute series.

Books

If you’re like me and love to read, I have some amazing books to turn you on to. The first book I would
recommend for those who are looking to please a partner with a vulva is “She Comes First” written by
sex therapist Dr. Ian Kerner. Trust me, this book works wonders for couples. It’s my secret weapon for
those who want to add more pleasure into their life. Speaking of vulvas, “Becoming Cliterate” by Dr.
Laurie Mintz is a book dedicated to increasing female pleasure by focusing on educating it’s readers on
the importance of the clitoris. In the same vein, “Come As You Are” by Dr. Emily Nagoski is a woman’s
guide to sexuality, sex drive, and anatomy. It may be one of the most frequently read books by my
clients. And then we come to “Sexual Intelligence.” “Sexual Intelligence” by sex therapist Dr. Marty Klein
is an easy read for clients and provides a great foundation to everyone—coupled or not.

Instagram

Most of us are scrollers. Whether you’re 24 or 42 you probably have an Instagram account and you’re in
luck because I have some great accounts for you to follow. For daily sex education content, look into the
following Instagram accounts: @AfroSexology, @justinjlehmiller, and @HealingwithElyssa. These content creators consistently post information that normalize various sexual experiences and give you tips on how to increase pleasure for you and your
partner(s).

Websites

Lastly, there are also great websites such as OMGYES.com (Become a member at SHA and get on for free!), Beducated.com, and Vmtherapy.com. These websites teach users how to orgasm, how to masturbate, and learn how to better in bed. Who doesn’t want to learn that?

So there you have it, my favorite resources condensed into a small blog post. More than anything, I
want you to realize you can become more educated and sexually liberated without having to pursue
higher education. The education is accessible to you right now and is *mostly* free. If you are
experiencing distress from sexual dysfunction, reach out to a sex therapist. Find one that you feel
comfortable with. Explore your specific concerns with an expert that has dedicated their life to studying
how to help others have a more fulfilling sex life. Your pleasure is priority.
