How Can Spirituality Make Your Life Feel Fuller?
Do you consider yourself to be spiritual? The wonderful thing about spirituality is that it can take many different forms and be unique to you. Like any relationship, the more you nurture it the better and more fulfilling it will be.
What is spirituality?
Spirituality is a personal experience that relies on a system of personal beliefs when searching for the meaning of life. While spirituality can be found through religion, it can also be totally non-religious. Some ways people practice spirituality are through meditation and mindfulness, yoga, or even nature and art.
How can spirituality make your life feel fuller?
- Higher Purpose: Believing in something greater than ourselves can be inspiring and motivating. If we live in alignment with a higher purpose, we can help others and shift our focus outwards. This can be especially helpful if we feel lost, or we feel the occasional bout of existential dread. (Sunday’s, am I right?)
- Community: Welcoming spirituality into our lives can connect us with like-minded individuals. As humans, we have an innate desire to connect and feel connected. Getting involved with a community that practices spirituality, such as a yoga studio, can help you feel grounded.
- Gives Strength: In times of adversity, we may feel lost, confused, or even helpless. Spirituality allows us to heal by offering our anxiety to an external being, whatever that may look like to you. This could be the belief that everything happens for a reason, or that an event is a part of a greater plan. Spirituality can help build resilience and guide us through life’s toughest moments.
- Offers peace of mind: Spirituality promotes respect for spirits of all kinds. This type of oneness encourages us to care about the people around us, all living beings, and our environment. The more we care about the things that surround us, the more attention we pay to them. This type of mindfulness can allow us to see the beauty in all things, giving us a more grateful and present attitude.
- Tune into yourself: Since spirituality is a highly personal journey, we can learn a lot about ourselves along the way. By connecting with yourself on a deeper level, you can learn more about your dislikes, your interests, your value system, and how you want to live your life. Spirituality can be an excellent tool for introspection and self-improvement.
How can you practice spirituality? Here are a few tips to get you started.
- Meditate: Meditation gives us the space to pause and reflect. It can bring us closer to ourselves and to our surroundings. We love the app Headspace for some guided meditations.
- Yoga: Yoga is beneficial both physically and mentally. There is something so grounding about being in alignment with your body, mind, and breath.
- Practice Gratitude: Keep a gratitude journal. Try to write 3-5 things you are grateful for every day, big or small. It could be your family, warm weather, or your comfy bed. Taking the time to notice and thank the everyday details of our lives makes our experiences feel fuller and gives us time to slow down.
Spirituality looks different for everyone. Take the time to reflect inwards, and don’t be afraid to do some research to get you started. Many of our own therapists at Respark Therapy incorporate spirituality and mindfulness into their practices.
