Things we have learned from TV Star Therapist, Dr. Chris Donaghue

Questions we often receive from people who want to start a career in sexuality is how can they become a better more well-rounded sexuality professional? Dr. Chris Donaghue, one of the top leading sex therapists in the industry suggests that if you want to become a better sexuality professional, have more sex! By experiencing lots of different sex and sexualities, by immersing yourself in diverse sexuality, you begin to truly understand it. Just like how great chefs cook non-stop, and writers write daily, sexuality experts should have lots of sex.
We have followed Dr. Chris Donaghue ever since we was on MTV starring in a show called Bad Sex. We had the pleasure of meeting him in person in 2015 at an AASECT Conference when we presented on healthy sexuality. Here are some of the most important things he taught us that year:
- Children don’t cry themselves to sleep they give up. It’s an attachment rupture.
- Gays f*ck first. Getting to know each other through sexuality and intimacy is a powerful experience.
- Private practice therapy Forms should have a blank line for may of the questions. Checking a category or a box won’t be as inclusive.
- Use the word Partner — don’t use husband/wife.
- Stay away from the word “normal” bc our cultural norms are unhealthy.
- I’m not disordered, I’m just different. I’m queer.
Since that initial meeting, we have made Dr. Chris Donaghue our clinical education director of the Sexual Health Alliance (SHA). A progressive and radical training organization that provides sexuality education to clinicians, MDs, OGBYNs, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists, Gynecologists, Educators and Coaches. We have been extremely fortunate to have Dr. Chris travel the world with SHA delivering high quality conferences training new and seasoned professionals.
