Communication in Relationships: Common Pitfalls
By: Robyn Flores, MS, LMFT-A, LPCC
For many couples, it can take several years before making the decision to reach out for therapeutic assistance and support. As a therapist, I have found that many times couples come in due to a lack of communication or lack of effective, empathic communication, even if they think they are coming in for a totally different reason! This lack of communication trickles into several other areas of the relationship, especially in the areas of sex and intimacy.
A good starting point is thinking about your needs, wants, and desires as an individual. This helps with differentiation of self, and to become truly differentiated one must practice self-validation, self-soothing, and introspection. Then, you can list the needs, wants, and desires for the relationship and for a healthy, satisfying sexual relationship. The ability to meet our own needs, engage in self-validation, and bring our whole self to our relationships can provide a solid foundation for highly intimate and erotic sexual relationships.
Communicating needs, wants, and desires can be a courageous and healing act for the benefit of the relationship. Communication is the key that unlocks opportunities for partners to share each other’s inner worlds and partners can begin to support each other’s dreams as well as create shared meaning in the intimate as well as the daily experiences.
