Losing your virginity is a big milestone in your life, especially in American culture. The concept of virginity is a social construct referring to one’s first sexual experience ever or with a lover. For some, losing one’s virginity doesn’t have to look like penetrative sex, it can include many other sexual acts or expressions. Losing your virginity can become a stigma in our society, and the later in life you wait to have sex sometimes the harder it can be to talk about it. Perhaps sex is something that doesn’t interest you at all, and that is totally okay too. Either way, we’re here to talk with you about your experience around your virginity (or as we like to call it, making your "sexual debut") and help you navigate the world in a way that you believe best suits you.

Common issues around virginity or a "sexual debut" that bring clients to therapy can include:

  • Getting comfortable talking about sex
  • Understanding the personal issue around virginity
  • Navigating the stigma around virginity
  • Exploring asexuality
  • Exploring non-penetrative sexual experiences
  • Mentally preparing for one’s first sexual encounter
  • Finding sexual compatibility
  • Finding one’s own sexual interests and desires

Unconsummated marriages

An unconsummated marriage might be another reason to come to sex and couples therapy. The Journal of Your Sexual Medicine explains an unconsummated marriage (UM) as “the failure to perform successful sexual intercourse at the beginning of marriage.” This is more common in relationships where sexual experiences do not occur until after marriage. Unsuccessful sexual intercourse can happen because of a variety of reasons, but the most common reasons are due to dysfunctions like vaginismus, erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or lack of a comprehensive sexuality education. At Respark, our therapists are highly skilled and trained in sexuality issues, including sexual dysfunction and unconsummated marriages.
