How to refer a ReSpark therapist

To ensure the right outcomes for patients, below are some guidelines and best practices to follow when making referrals.

  1. Determine and document the reason for the referral
  2. Explain to your patient why you believe the referral is necessary
    • This would include discussing what the patient should expect
    • Document that you have informed the patient
  3. Contact specialist(s) directly to discuss referral
    • Agree on the urgency of the referral, the length of the process, and ways in which you will communicate–this can be considered your referral agreement
    • Should the treatment you agree with fall outside the patient’s network, appeal the restriction on the patient’s behalf
  4. Create a method of monitoring referral
  5. Remember: There is no obligation for a patient to complete your referral, though should they not, discuss the potential reasons why
    • Document that you have “closed” the referral

ReSpark's stance on Sex Addiction

Respark believes that we as therapists and educators need to challenge the concept of sexual addiction and explore a different model of sexuality. We do not support CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) programs or agree that compulsive sexual behavior or problematic sexual behavior is empirically supported and do not promote the language we deem to be shaming.

Respark also supports the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists’ (AASECT) stance on this topic. For more information, please read AASECT’s Position on Sex Addiction here.
