Our founder and director of Respark, Heather McPherson was interviewed for She Knows magazine about the incorporation of ethical non-monogamy into relationships. She Knows is a magazine geared toward mothers that provide “women holistically with the most relevant health and lifestyle coverage.” (https://www.sheknows.com/about-us/) If you’re unfamiliar with the vocabulary surrounding ethical non-monogamy, the article describes it as “an umbrella term for all the ways you can, with consent, explore love and sex with multiple people.” (Escandon) Ethical non-monogamy is important because it ensures all individuals in the relationship feel loved, safe, and happy. Consent is the first step in this process, and Heather reminds us if one partner has consented under coercion…the agreement may be compromised.” Without proper consent, non-monogamy is not safe to practice! Heather gives tips and ideas on how to achieve this balance in the interview and even offers a few book recommendations for those curious about ethical non-monogamy.
One of the tips Heather provides for those curious is that they should “ find a therapist that has a certification in consensual non-monogamy or has had advanced training in non-monogamy relationship structures, that can guide you through and answer your most pressing questions.” If you have questions it’s best to reach out to a licensed professional who is certified to help you. It’s important to remember that ethical non-monogamy is not going to look the same for everyone. If you want to learn more about ethical monogamy then check out Heather’s interview on She Knows for tips on starting your journey!
