Getting to Know Lollie George

Therapist-Focused Section:

  • Tell us about yourself and your career as a therapist and how you specialized to see couples and sexual health issues.
    • I did not start my career until late in life. I was a homeschool mom for the first half. Once I figured out that I wanted to use my experiences to help hurting people, I went to school in my late thirties. A religious and judgmental answer in a marriage class to a question about anal sex sparked a fire in me to counsel/educate people to have a positive sex outlook.
  • What are some of the major theories you ground your work in and why? humanistic/person-centered/SFT.
    • I find that I am a natural encourager and enjoy helping people see their own potential.
  • What are 2 of the most important things you hope to accomplish within the first session with a new client?
    • Collaborate with them to narrow down their goals in therapy and to help them find hope for themselves that they might not have walked into the session with.
  • Why should a client come to see you at Respark?
    • I am passionate about helping people to find their true selves. I collaborate well with clients to figure out their goals for therapy. I am judgment-free, sex positive, body positive, and I am an abuse survivor which has created empathy in me for people of all walks of life.
  • What are 2 ways that clients can Respark their love life or their sex life?
    • To explore their own bodies-whether with a mirror, toys, their own hands…to figure out what gives them pleasure. Then to learn to communicate their needs/desires/pleasure to their partner(s).
  • What is one way clients can maintain passion in their relationships and/or for their career?
    • To always be an archeologist – studying themselves and their partner(s) – if they are always learning something new, it is hard to get bored.

Getting to Know the Therapist:

  • What are the top 3 items on your bucket list?
    • Go to bora bora, go to a nude beach, and teach on a stage about sex/comp het/coming out late in life/or any of the myriad of other topics that interest me!
  • Who is your sexual role model?
    • Dr. Ruth and Betty Dodson
  • What are your top 2 books that have influenced you and why?
    • Girl Sex 101 because it was a great book to dip my toes in the water for how to have sex with a woman. The Shack because it began my journey of deconstruction from the religion of my childhood.
  • What are your favorite podcasts?
    • The Lesbian Chronicles
  • Where is your next dream vacation?
    • My dream vacation (after I win the lottery for the cost) is to stay a week in one of those over-the-water bungalows in Bora Bora.
  • What are 2 of the most important things you do every day?
    • Stretch in the morning and process the day with my partner.
  • What is your favorite story to tell?
    • About coming out late in life as a lesbian and going small-time unintentionally viral on tiktok.
  • What is your advice to someone wanting to become a couples and sex therapist?
    • Get into a really good sex therapy certification program (go SHA!), read and watch everything you can get your hands on about sex! Check your biases at the door…and when you find any, and we all have them, figure out where they came from!
  • What would you say your “Ideal Client” would be? (what client you think you could help most)?
    • Clients who are in the LGBTQIA+ community-both those who are out and who are not-to help them gain acceptance for themselves.
  • What niche do you find is underserved in most therapist’s offices nowadays?
    • porn/sex workers/poly/kink/LGBTQIA+ – since I live in the south, really anything that is viewed as unusual.
  • What issue relating to Sex Therapy are you most passionate about?
    • Communication-to help people figure out how to express what they like-or to even figure out what that is and to help them live that.
  • What is the biggest individual asset that you believe that you bring to your clients?
    • Self-acceptance. I have worked hard in my own therapy to learn to love myself. This help me to help my clients find that for themselves.
  • What would you say to those who feel uncomfortable discussing sex and sexuality?
    • I would explain that sex is natural, that we can go at their pace and discuss what they feel comfortable discussing -and when they are ready, they will feel it in their gut!
  • What inspired you to take this specialty in your therapy career?
    • I was in a church marriage class. The leader was a Certified Christian Sex Therapist. A few people had asked about anal sex and her answer spewed shame and fear over all of the participants. I later confronted her about her answer and how it was important to not ‘yuck someone else’ yum’. She didn’t agree-but it put me on the path to become a sex therapist.
  • What is the #1 takeaway from your experiences so far as a therapist?
    • Every person walks into therapy feeling alone-and that they are the only one struggling with whatever brought them to therapy. It is my job to help them see they are not alone and to give them a safe space to process their pain.
  • What aspect of human sexuality fascinates you the most?
    • How the clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings and the penis only has 4,000…but the church tells women that sex is only for procreation and duty, but not pleasure!
  • What type of clients do you not see many of and wish to see more of?
    • Kink, poly, LGBTQIA+, sex workers, and my new fascination- only fans creators!
