Let’s get to know Robyn Flores!
What would you say your “Ideal Client” would be? (what client you think
you could help most)?
I love helping the client(s) that feels lost and does not know where to start when it comes to creating and sharing their authentic selves, whether it be due to trauma, experiencing feelings of guilt or shame, or due to other life events or transitions. I enjoy exploring and providing tools to help clients become better communicators so that they can create meaning of their authenticity, relationships, and sexuality.
What niche do you find is underserved in most therapist’s offices nowadays?
I definitely feel that there is a lack of focus in regard to the intersection of body image and sexual pleasure in all types of bodies; most work is done with the white, cis-female individual struggling with Anorexia Nervosa in mind when it comes to negative body image concerns. I am currently working on a course for clients and clinicians that addresses sex and healing body image in all types of bodies!
What issue relating to Sex Therapy are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about helping individuals and couples acknowledge and express what they need, want, and desire as their authentic, intimate selves, and to embrace and create meaning in their sexuality. I find that in and out of session, I am on a constant mission to eliminate the power of shame surrounding sexuality.
What is the biggest individual asset that you believe that you bring to your
clients?
I bring professional, educational, and personal insight to my clients. I am not a blank slate; I am a human who shows compassion, empathy, and, often, humor. I have a passion for the work I do because I have past personal experience with some of the struggles that many of my clients struggle with as well! I want them to leave our sessions and our work together feeling empowered.
What would you say to those who feel uncomfortable discussing sex and
sexuality?
I want the client to feel comfortable to begin sharing their own definition of sex and what it means to them; there is never a right or wrong answer. I take it at a comfortable pace, led by the client(s), and I follow a model the starts with seeking permission to discuss sex, in general, and then the sexual concerns; then I may expand the dialogue by providing education or limited information, followed by specific suggestions, and, if needed, intensive interventions in therapy. I reflect the language my clients use for sexual terms so that they feel more comfortable.
What inspired you to take this specialty in your therapy career?
One of my professors really shined the light that has led me down this path in my career. My own past personal experiences and healing also lit the fire that fueled my passion for helping others in this capacity. Learning from, and being validated by, professionals in the Sexual Wellness field through the Sexual Health Alliance has solidified my “why” for being in this field.
What is the #1 takeaway from your experiences so far as a therapist?
The therapeutic relationship created and experienced between client(s) and therapist creates movement and change in both parties – and I thrive as a therapist in the midst of experiencing and witnessing that type of growth.
What aspect of human sexuality fascinates you the most?
The physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of sex are fascinating to me – and, fun fact, the clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings! Sex, in and of itself, is truly fascinating!
What type of clients do you not see many of and wish to see more of?
I wish to see more clients in recovery from substance use and/or eating disorders who are trying to regain pleasure for themselves and intimacy with their partners. I feel that there is an important piece of the recovery process that isn’t addressed often, and that is recovering sexual pleasure after experiencing so much pain and numbing of both partners involved.
