Many areas of the country are still in quarantine, or on lock down.  Many areas of the nation are opening up.  There has been a lot of uncertainty and anxiety surrounding the many events of 2020; and, on top of it all, we have an important election happening this year. Luckily, there are some coping and connecting activities you can do to help keep your mental health in check.

Here are some ideas to help you get through the final stretch of 2020:

  • Create a balance of structure and spontaneity. Too much of a routine can feel suffocating, but not enough can feel like chaos.  Sprinkle some spontaneity into your day, week, or weekend to add a sense of adventure.
  • List what you can and cannot control.  Think of the weather – we cannot control it; we can just prepare for it the best we can.
  • Add joyful movement to each day as nourishment and connection. Walking, yoga, and sex are all great ways to get moving and connected with nature, ourselves, and our partner(s).
  • Reach out to at least two people each day.  This will help you and others feel less isolated.
  • Notice the helpers in the world. Become a helper. Volunteer time to help others – even if it is virtually.
  • Find humor in each day. Jokes, comics, funny movies/shows, podcasts, and, of course, memes are useful ways to generate laughter.
  • Practice self-care.  Check in with yourself each morning and evening. Journal your thoughts; create art.
  • Set limits on news and social media.
  • Take it one day at a time (or one hour, or one moment). Breathe.
  • Set some goals….and smash them…. but try not to get hung up on the “shoulds” (“I should have done x and y and z during quarantine”).  Focus on progress over perfection.
  • Connect with nature in a childlike manner: soak in the sun, carve a pumpkin, play in the snow.
  • Become present, mindful, grounded in a non-judgmental space.  We can easily get caught in auto-pilot as the days merge together. Take time to pay attention to your senses.  Feel your heartbeat, your inhale, your exhale.
  • Try something new to respark your passion and intimacy with your partner(s).
  • Schedule an appointment with your therapist.  We are here to support you during these trying times.
