How to be Successful in Therapy at Respark

By Heather McPherson LPC-S, LMFT-S, CST
When people come to therapy they are often unsure of what to expect and sometimes ask about how to get the most out of our meetings. There are several important things that you can do to increase your chances for success in therapy.
We define “successful therapy” as achieving one’s desired results in the most comfortable and efficient way possible. This article will briefly lay out my recommendations on how clients can be successful in therapy at Respark.
Commit
Do you know the saying that most of the work is just showing up? Yep. This can be the hardest part of therapy. Showing up in the room each week and having willingness to check in about where you’re at right now. Commit to attending at least 4-6 sessions and see success grow.
Honesty
Honesty with yourself and your therapist is a core element of what makes therapy successful. When you share your current struggles, it can make the therapy move that much faster. This may seem obvious, but it can be harder than you think. Clients can often feel a tremendous amount of shame discussing personal struggles and issues. If that’s you, you’re not alone. Bringing light in and shining it on the shame can work miracles though, so don’t be afraid to share what’s going on. Shame grows when we tuck it away and hide it. Commit to being honest about where you are and where you want to go.
Courage
You already have courage inside you if you are reading this blog. It’s nerve racking to share intimate or personal details about your life with another person. Building trust with your therapist can help you share what’s working and perhaps more importantly, what’s not working. Discussing what’s not working in therapy can feel scary, many people are afraid of hurting their therapist’s feelings. But Respark therapists thrive on feedback. This is how we become the best couple’s and sex therapists we can be. And more importantly, we want you to succeed and that means figuring out what will work. If you avoid these discussions, you may end up feeling resentful or prematurely end your therapy experience. Our goal is for your therapy experience to be transformational, it’s to open the door to new experiences and enjoy more out of this one life. You are already courageous, take it a step further and have these conversations if needed.
Persistence
You will succeed in this process because you are persistent. You are reading this page into the end because you are determined to get the most out of therapy. Hurray! You probably are the person that asks for what you want, you do your homework and come to sessions with a particular topic in mind. You will be most successful when you are an active participant in the therapy process. Some of our clients will take notes as we speak, and others are asking questions diligently.
Successful therapy at Respark can deliver significant results and change your life. By committing to the process, being honest with yourself and your therapist, finding your courage to speak up and being persistent when things get hard, couples and sex therapy at Respark will help you live your most passionate life.
