WHAT IS INDIVIDUAL SEX-POSITIVE THERAPY?

Sex-positive therapy for individuals is a subset of individual therapy that focuses on sexual exploration and sex-positivity all with zero judgment of desires, practices, and fantasies. Respark’s therapists have not only taken additional classes on sexuality and received supervised training in sex therapy, but have already explored their sexual attitudes, biases, and beliefs. Our sex-positive therapists are unconditionally accepting and welcome all potential clients, no matter your relationship style.

Because sexuality is often accompanied by past generational messages, political and/or religious influence, and damaging misinformation, your sexual identity may be under distress. We encourage and support you as we tease apart any preconceived and unproductive ideas you may still hold, which is true for all topics, not just sexuality. As a team, you and your Respark therapist will work towards improving and strengthening communication skills that enhance your intimacy and how to communicate your desires, both in and out of the bedroom. We believe being able to properly express your desires, while also understanding your partner’s or partners’ sexual identity and desires can be transcendent for your relationships.

There are many reasons to seek out sex-positive therapy and the list below are just some examples:

  • Negotiating relationship roles as they change
  • Establishing healthy boundaries in a relationship
  • Encouraging and working through exploration
  • Discussion of fantasies and how to encourage situations to live them out
  • Navigating life changes like a new birth, child aging out of the house
  • Consider and set realistic goals as a couple for the future
  • Space to share and celebrate
  • Adding another person to the relationship or opening the relationship
  • Opportunities to get deeper, to the root of any problem
  • Working through familial grief or loss
  • Strengthen communication skills with each other

At Respark, we will help you sort through the questions and the emotions that may arise from infidelity or an affair as well as help you figure out a path to healing. Although individual therapy can be helpful, we recommend couples therapy.

WHAT IS SEX-POSITIVITY?

The sex-positive movement is a social and philosophical movement that aims to reframe cultural attitudes and moral norms around sexuality. Those that are sex-positive promote the recognition of sex and sexuality, through varying forms of expression, as a critical and healthy part of the human experience. Being sex-positive is emphasizing the importance of safe sex practices, personal sovereignty, and consent throughout all interactions as well as comprehensive sexual education. To be sex-positive, one considers sex (and everything it entails from certain sex acts, gender, orientation, and identity) without moral distinctions or cultural influence. To be sex-positive is to be non-judgemental.

Because cultural taboos, stigmas, shyness, embarrassment, and shame can greatly affect our personal views, these topics can add pressure to a relationship. In these moments, know that there is no shame in getting help. We at Respark are dedicated to helping you and your partner(s) navigate through life changes, loss and grief, sexual issues, and all stages of a relationship. With Respark, you can spark your love for life with your partner(s) again.

10 ways to be sex positive right now

  1. Value your sexuality
Your sexuality–your body, your sex acts, your wants and needs–have value. You have value.
  2. Share and respect pronouns
Sharing your pronouns, even if they match your gender assigned at birth, is an excellent way to provide a safe space for those whose pronouns may differ.
  3. Get educated!
There are countless books, TV shows, movies, online spaces (much like our sister company, the Sexual Health Alliance) that promote sex-positive education.
  4. Acknowledge your reactions towards sex or sexuality
When speaking with someone about sex, recognize any emotions that may arise within you. Be gentle as you examine what information gives you a strong reaction.
  5. Advocate for sex-positive policies
The lawmakers in this country do not prioritize sex-positive policies and laws and only by removing these people from office can we see true, nationwide change.
  6. Prioritize a healthy sex life
This means setting healthy sexual boundaries with yourself and any partners as well as using protection from STIs and unwanted pregnancies.
  7. Ask for consent and encourage communication
Consent is a non-negotiable for healthy sex, as is communicating your sexual wants and needs, both in and out of the bedroom.
  8. Confront any unhealthy sexual patterns
Staying silent promotes uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situations when it comes to sex and sexuality.
  9. Masturbate
Do we need to say more? Loving yourself is the first step towards sex positivity!
  10. Work towards body positivity
Developing a healthy relationship with your body, especially the areas you associate with any social stigma or shame, can greatly improve your perspective on your own sex life.

TESTIMONIAL

“Our therapist was so refreshing with a warm personality. I was very comfortable with her and she genuinely listens and demonstrates she understood my point of view when she reflects on what I have said. My husband was anxious the whole time because he has not had a good experience with a counselor before, but she did great when talking with him and giving him time to open up. We look forward to more sessions with her. “
